Do all this as root in a terminal...
<LOG OUT OF GNOME then use ctrl + alt + F1>
# yum clean all
# rpm -Uvh http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/fedora/linux/releases/8/Everything/i386/os/Packages/fedora-release-8-3.noarch.rpm
# mv /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo.rpmnew
# mv /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo.rpmnew /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo
# telinit 3
# yum update rpm\* yum\*
# yum upgrade
# yum groupupdate Base
# yum grouplist
# grub-install /dev/hda
# grub-install /dev/sda

If you were using ubuntu this would have been much easier...
$ sudo do-release-upgrade
