Well, that may be true about the tin foil hat. But, before you call me
paranoid, tell me again why you are using Ubuntu instead of Microslop? Also,
consider the following:
I see a lot of talk here regarding back doors in MS's OS. And, while I don't
think it's economically feasible to keep track of every computer in the
country/world, it still would not surprise me to find out that somebody has
figured out a way to hook up enough Cray supercomputers with the software to
do so. And the exorbitant cost is not an issue; it would simply be taken from
black ops money, and none would be the wiser.
I remember a few years ago hearing about the Echelon program that listened to
international (and post 9/11, domestic) phone calls and at detecting certain
'key words' would record the conversation for later analysis by the NSA. So,
yes, I'll keep that tin foil hat, and my survival gear handy.
You may recognize this quote from the Lutheran anti-Nazi activist, who formed
a resistance movement and was then arrested and spent years in prison for his
“First, they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out because I was
not a socialist.
"Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was
not a trade unionist.
"Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
"Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.”
I've found an updated paraphrase of this:
They came for the Muslims, and I Didn't Speak Up

(Author's Note: The USA Patriot Act became law a little over one year ago.)
(Editor's Note: This New Year let us remember freedom in America as it was and
think about what the loss of that freedom means to us all. We, each and
everyone of us, have a duty to America to speak up whenever and where ever our
Freedom is taken or diminished.)
"First they came for the Muslims, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a
"Then they came for the immigrants, detaining them indefinitely solely on the
certification of the attorney general, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't
"Then they came to eavesdrop on suspects consulting with their attorneys, and
I didn't speak up because I wasn't a suspect.
"Then they came to prosecute non citizens before secret military commissions,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a non-citizen
"Then they came to enter homes and offices for unannounced, sneak and peak
searches, and I didn't speak up because I had nothing to hide.
"Then they came to reinstate Cointelpro and resume the infiltration and
surveillance of domestic religious and political groups, and I didn't speak up
because I no longer participated in any groups.
"Then they came to arrest American citizens and hold them indefinitely without
any charges and without access to lawyers, and I didn't speak up because I
would never be arrested.
"Then they came to institute TIPS Terrorism Information and Prevention System
recruiting citizens to spy on other citizens and I didn't speak up because I
"Then they came for anyone who objected to government policy because it only
aided the terrorists and gave ammunition to America's enemies, and I didn't
speak up because I didn't speak up.
"Then they came for me, and by that time, no one was left to speak up."
So, where is the line between paranoia and valid concern?
