High performance PCI-e cards are power hogs requiring heavy duty onboard cooling, and card edge contacts incapable of handling the current, thus the external power connectors.

Tweaktown.com has a cursory article on the 9800GTX showing the test of the card in a test system with only the Mobo, 9800GTX and a SATA drive connected, showing a total "system draw" of  full load 290W and  idle 179W.

Even hungier, was the Sapphire HD3870X2, with a 402W~206W spread in same test configuration.
