Plain VNC works just fine with ARD.  ARD will get you better performance 
with a better UI, but any normal VNC client should work fine.  I use 
ChickenOfTheVNSea myself, and while it's slow it works.

I'd prefer something faster, and so I might be tempted to pay extra money to 
get ARD.  But not yet.
