have you checked the Ubuntu Bug reports yet,  a quick google turned up 
the following bug report 
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-utils/+bug/60937 from 
'06...it is old but there may be some ideas in there that you could 
try.  This is my usual approach to problems such as this.
