Thanks to all Disabling the CDs from the active repository and 
reinstalling 'ubuntu desktop' did the final trick I now can play 
encrypted DVDs with Xzine and I have the main sound card volume control 
working, the old geeser is a happy geezer,  soooo 'appy nu yr
