Well, I tried renaming the 4 directories you listed above, but they had 
no effect.  However, I went on a hunt for anything that mentioned 
"compiz" and it looks like I found it.  In  / home / <username> / 
.config / compiz , I used your method of renaming the 2 files 
(compiz-manager and enable-compiz) and 1 directory (compizconfig) to 
effectively disable those settings, and boom -- I'm good to go again.

Thanks for the ideas & suggestions.
