 From the command line:

su -
(type password)
vim /boot/grub/grub.cfg

I'd remove the 'quiet splash' from the linux line so I can see what is 
going on.

Your linux line should read:

    linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-16-generic root=/dev/sda5 ro

Remember to comment out the search line with a leading #.

Also, please trim your posts to the minimum needed and bottom post.
