Mutt isn't nearly as intimidating as one would make it out to be. In
some cases when one receives a crapload of mail, like 50 or 60 mails a
day, it's nice to have a more customizeable email client.
Mutt may not be for you, but maybe you'll like it. It's meant to be
driven from the keyboard, so it can be very powerful.
It just depends on what you're comfortable with. I still use
thunderbird, because I like some of the things it offers, and i'm too
lazy to spend a day configuring mutt. Sometimes I wish I weren't so lazy :)
