Who said anything about LVM?

Maxed out at 3? Hardly. Here is my layout right now:

/dev/sda1 * 1 13 /boot 100M
/dev/sda2 14 1229 Ubuntu 9.04 10G minus
/dev/sda3 1230 1594 Swap 2G
/dev/sda4 1595 38913 Extended
/dev/sda5 1595 2900 lfs-6.5 10G
/dev/sda6 2901 4206 lfs-6.5 10G Aug 2009
/dev/sda7 4207 5422 Ubuntu 9.04 10G minus
/dev/sda8 5423 6728 lfs-66 10G
/dev/sda9 6729 11951 /usr/src 40G
/dev/sda10 11952 14563 /mnt/backup 20G
/dev/sda11 14564 15869 /home 10G
/dev/sda12 15870 19786 /data 30G
/dev/sda13 19787 21092 lfs-20110110 10G
/dev/sda14 21093 22398 lfs-20100816 10G
/dev/sda15 22399 23704 lfs-6.7 10G
/dev/sda16 23705 26136 Ubuntu 11.04 20G

I used to have sda17, but removed it.
