Thoughts from the lunatic fringe:
Once you get your BIOS configed to boot from a CD (or a
USB stick, you can try two things.
1. Get SuperGrub from www.supergrubdisk.org. I find that it
can boot most anything and fix or restore your grub.
2. Go to the WD web site and get their test CD to figure out
what the deal is with your old drive.
